NHS Inductions

by Chelsea Stewart

On Wednesday October 20, 2021 a new hardworking group of teen scholars were inducted into Laurel Jr/Sr High School’s National Honor Society. In total there were 22 new inductees this year selected to be a part of Laurel’s National Honor Society program. One of our very own reporters Abigail Richards completed two interviews with both the advisors of NHS, Mr. Rodgers and Mrs. Skerbetz, and a second interview with the President of NHS, a senior, Elysia Fabian. Provided below are the Q&A’s from these interviews.

The Advisors

Abby: What is National Honors Society?

Mr. Rodgers : An organization that is set up nationally to recognize student leaders who hold the characteristics of scholarship, service, leadership, and character.

Abby: What are the requirements to be inducted into NHS?

Mrs. Skerbetz: Students have to be a junior or a senior and they have to hold at least a 4.0 gpa and over the course of their membership in NHS they can not have any grades lower than an 83 percent.

President of NHS

Abby: What is your goal as president of the NHS?

Elysia:  So I run all of the meetings and I oversee all of the activities. I put in almost the same amount of work as everyone else. We are a team, a society, and we all put in work to fill out the four characteristics of being a NHS member.

Abby: What are some of the service projects that are required and that you hope to accomplish?

Elysia: So coming up is our blood drive on November 3rd. We are going to do two of those, and we are also looking forward to cleaning up Spartan Park. We also have a nursing home visit that we are going to do and then another activity in December that we have not decided on.

Abby: Can you tell me more about the upcoming blood drive?

Elysia: On November 3rd we will be having it in the old gym for students 16 and up and adults to come and give their blood in a time of increased need. We are really excited!

Congratulations to all those who have been chosen and inducted into the NHS! We cannot wait to see what you accomplish over the course of the year!
