Trout Stocking

by Jackson Sauders

March 24th was the first day the Conservation Club went on a trout stock this year. The first responsibility club members had was loading and unloading canoes at a specific spot. Then, some members split off to help transport the trout at Bob’s nursery or prepare the canoes. Once all the trout is in the container, everybody helps move the trout to the canoes. The canoes can hold three people and have a barrel attached to the side to keep the trout. Two people work together on the canoe to steer, while the third is responsible for distributing the trout out of the barrel. That day, the members of the canoe were going down Slippery Rock Creek and were instructed to release trout at Jake’s Hole and The Superhole. Everyone needs to communicate with each other to be in the canoe and make sure they are on the same page. The last thing everybody wants is for somebody to tip over. There will be more trout stocking opportunities as the rest of the school year goes on, and hopefully, the temperature warms up. Trout stocking is beneficial for recreational fishing and the trout population. If a student is interested in helping with a trout stock, they must sign up for Conservation Club with Mr. Shevitz at the beginning of the year.
