FID Day
by Breah Dewberry
On Wednesday, January 22, 2025, Laurel students participated in a Flexible Instructional Day (FID) due to inclement weather and frigid temperatures. Instead of attending school in person, students were required to log into a Google Meet call to be marked present.
Following a two-hour delay schedule, each class held a virtual session where teachers delivered lessons, assigned work, and took attendance. Because of this structure, the day counted as a full instructional day, eliminating the need for a makeup day in the school calendar.
To gain insight into the effectiveness of FID days, we spoke with some high school staff and students. Senior Kelly Karavias shared mixed feelings, stating, "I think that they can be good, but it might not be good for everyone’s focus. Some kids will do their work, some kids won’t." Meanwhile, high school counselor Matthew Pertile expressed a stronger opinion, calling FID days "an absolute waste of an educational opportunity."
As the possibility of future FID days arises, students and parents can stay informed by checking announcements and updates on the school website.
