Boys' Basketball Season

by Aaliyah Locke

The boys basketball team is coached by Ken Locke and assisted by Jason Burkes, Nick Marmo and Bill Jones. They are all pleased with the way the season is going so far, with a record of 9-5. All the boys work well together and play extremely well as a team.  With the height disadvantage they have been holding their own and pulling off some pretty good wins, such as the Mohawk game where Laban Barker made an amazing buzzer beater to collect the win for the Spartans.

Coach Locke has said on many occasions, “I think defense is our strength. We’ve been able to hold teams in the forties and thirties.” Despite losing all 5 starters from a year ago, which were boys who led the team the farthest in Spartan history, the current players are still continuing to learn and grow as a team between each practice and game. They were left with some big shoes to fill, and this group of boys are fighting for what last years’ boys fought for. They have great motivation from the Laurel community, family, and friends.

Seniors Kobe DeRosa and Eli Sickafuse have shown great leadership to the team and set examples to the younger players. As they push each other, they all continue to get better each day; it’s all about putting the time in. All of the coaches and players are striving to make the play-offs and hopefully give some teams a run for their money.
