Title I Federal Program Information
Title I is the largest federal assistance program for our nation’s schools. The goal is to provide a high quality education for every child. The
program provides extra help to students who need it the most. Districts receive Title I funds from the Federal Government through the
Pennsylvania Department of Education and distribute the funds to schools based on the number of students eligible for free and reduced
lunch. However, free and reduced lunch eligibility is only used to distribute funds. Students are selected to receive Title I services based
on their academic need, which is established through predetermined criteria.
Title I in the Laurel Elementary School
Our district’s Title I remediation program is supplemental Language Arts and/or Math instruction for those students in grades K-2 who need extra
academic support. Student eligibility for Title I remediation support is based on grade level eligibility criteria, which is explained in the next
section. The remediation support does not replace the grade level curriculum or instruction that occurs in the regular classroom. Instead,
students who participate in Title I services receive additional educational opportunities to strengthen their Language Arts and/or
Math skills. During Title I time, the focus is addressing reading and/or math skills that are not fully developed. The Title I teacher works with
students for approximately 30 minutes per session.
Who is Eligible?
Title I eligibility is determined by student’s performance results on the following assessments used by Laurel Elementary:
Eligibility factors:
1. AIMSweb Plus
2. Local Assessments
After each assessment, the Title I teacher reviews each student’s assessment results to determine student’s strengths and weaknesses
and Title I eligibility. Criteria has been established for each grade level. Based on the assessment data students may be eligible to receive Title I
services.
How Will Students Benefit from Title I Support?
Students benefit from Title I remediation in various ways:
The program is “success oriented”.
Additional opportunities and strategies to master skills and concepts.
Students gain self-confidence.
Students’ frustration levels decrease.
Smaller intervention groups allow for increased opportunities for teacher/student interaction.
Individual attention increases students’ focus and motivation.
The program objective correlates with classroom objectives.
Students practice and become familiar with a variety of learning strategies.
Time is spent working on each qualifying student’s specific weaknesses.
