Athlete of the Week
by Shannon Sauders
Junior basketball player, Laban Barker, has been named Athlete of the Week by New Castle News for the week of January 10th! Laban has been a great contributor to the scores for the games! In a game against the Mohawk Warriors, he had a total of 29 points with a winning 3-pointer at the buzzer beater in the second overtime that brought the Laurel Spartans into the playoffs. The Spartans are currently 4th in the WPIAL 3A 1 Conference and have a record of 10-6. Laban’s love for the game can be seen on the court and supporting teammates. Laban was asked questions about his passion for basketball. Let’s have a look!
Shannon: Has there been someone who has been an inspiration in your basketball career?
Laban: I play for God, every time I step on that court I want to represent him, and the love he has for us. I’m a fan of Stephen Curry as well, he makes a lot of shots that I hope to be able to be good enough to make as well.
Shannon: What has been your favorite memory so far this season?
Laban: My favorite moments of the season have to be the times off the court where me and my teammates and coaches are having a great time, but putting in work as well.
Shannon: Do you have any special routines you do to get in the right mindset before the game?
Laban: I like spaghetti before the game, I read a few Bible verses before every game, I listen to music, most of what I do before the game is to ease my mind to move relaxed knowing I got a great team, great coaches, and Jesus on my side.
Shannon: What is a piece of advice you would give to younger athletes?
Laban: My piece of advice would be to give it your all. You don’t know how long you’ll be playing a sport or using your athleticism for a certain thing so go 100% in everything you do.
What is to come?
As the Spartans are coming to a close to their regular season and getting in gear for playoffs, it’s important to have a focused mindset. Laban puts that mindset into the game along with his humble and hardworking attitude. He is a great leader and example for the team and could not be more proud to represent the Spartans! Best wishes to Laban and the team for the rest of the season and playoffs!
